He was befriended by Gene in Solitary confinement due to Gene basically making it impossible for him to harm him or fight with him so he had to learn to live with him and grew to actually appreciate him. Sadly, to punish Gene these memories were wiped from his mind and while he has brief flashes of their past relationship, they have to form a new one.
